FAQs
Do you take custom orders?
Yes! I take custom orders depending on the request. Please contact me to discuss.
Do you resize rings?
I currently do not offer ring re-sizing but I am happy to take a custom order for a ring made in your size.
How do I remove tarnish from my jewelry?
A soft polishing cloth is the easiest, safest way to remove tarnish from bronze and silver jewelry.
What if I don’t know my ring size?
You can go to a jeweler in your area to have your fingers sized, which is great to know if you are a jewelry buyer. You can also measure a ring you already own and like the fit of by taking the inside diameter measurement in millimeters. I can take this information and create a ring in your size or let you know if a certain size will fit.
Do you do repairs?
While I would love to offer repairs in the future, at the moment I only take repairs of my own work, should any be necessary. Depending on the issue, it may or may not be able to be repaired.
What is gold fill? what is gold plate?
All the gold tone ear hooks Melusae offers are gold filled. Gold fill is a thick layer of gold that is bonded to a base metal. Its thickness makes it durable and long lasting.
By contrast, gold plate is a thinner layer of gold that is bonded to a base material. While it provides a beautiful layer of gold on top of the item, it is not as durable as gold fill. Gold plate can last years with proper care, but will not last a lifetime as is the case with gold fill.
How do I properly care for my jewelry?
To prevent tarnish of bronze or silver pieces, keep them in a box and keep them dry! Reducing contact with air and with moisture helps prevent tarnish. Do not keep your jewelry in the bathroom for this reason. When wearing jewelry with stones or anything gold filled or gold plated, remove before showering, washing hands, or swimming. Clean and polish with a soft cloth rather than an abrasive material.
Why does bronze turn my skin green?
The bronze I use is a nickel free alloy of copper and tin. Due to the high copper content, a bronze ring may leave a green tint on your skin depending on your unique body chemistry.
The copper in bronze reacts to moisture, sweat, and skin oils and creates a tarnish called copper oxide, which is what leaves behind the green mark. People that live in humid environments and skin types with a higher acidity are more prone to this oxidation process. While it is harmless, it can be aesthetically frustrating.
You can reduce oxidation by cleaning your jewelry, washing it with soap and water and drying it thoroughly afterward. Removing your jewelry at night and before exercising or swimming can further prevent oxidation. I like to keep a silica packet in my jewelry box to remove any moisture.
