"To Rest And Dream" original linocut print 8"x10"

$30.00

To rest and dream is an homage to the romanticization of the ordinary and the Vincent Van Gogh paintings, ‘The bedroom’ and ‘Van Gogh’s Chair.’ These paintings show what was available for the artist to paint, but also find beauty in the restfulness of the mundane. Something as simple as a chair picks up so much memory and life from the person who sits in it every day. The title, To rest and dream, is inspired by the letters Vincent wrote to his brother Theo about his paintings, “The Bedroom.” Vincent was a prolific letter writer, and his words are full of care for the people he loved as well as a deep reverence for nature and beauty. Van Gogh worshipped how the light touched everything around him. “There is poetry on all sides.”

When I carved this print I spent my mornings sitting in my favorite blue velvet armchair by the window in a place I used to live, watching sky around me and daydreaming, observing the light filtered through clouds and leaves. This piece for me represents a place of comfort, the artist’s necessity of time spent time alone in quiet and beauty with dreams and visions. The role of an artist is to seek beauty and represent it in its many forms.

“It is with the reading of books the same as with looking at pictures; one must, without doubt, without hesitations, with assurance, admire what is beautiful. ”

- Vincent Van Gogh
